Hello readers! Today, I have a review of  the book Parabellum by Greg Hickey. The book will be released in October 2020. It is a crime thriller that is gritty and dark.

Without any further ramblings, let me get to the review.

Summary

A shooting at a Chicago beach leaves several dead and dozens injured. In the year before the attack, four individuals emerge as possible suspects.

An apathetic computer programmer.
An ex-college athlete with a history of head injuries.
An Army veteran turned Chicago cop.
A despondent high school student.

One of them is the shooter. Discover who and why.

What I Liked

As the summary mentions, there is a shooting at Chicago beach and four suspects are involved. The book is an outright gritty crime novel with a narrative that is unique. I must say, it was the narrative that kept me hooked onto the book. The story is impressive. I understand what the author was trying to get to: the depths of the human mind. It boggles me despite having read many crime and thriller novels.

What I appreciated was the way the author brought forward the naked nature of man. It is disturbing, but I thought the author had done an incredible job at describing the human traits just as it is: no frills. How conditions and circumstances affect some of us and as a result, the action that follows, is starkly described.

Sad at times and amazingly accurate at others, the character description is just beyond words. Each suspect comes with a background story and we are introduced to the situations they faced. The story moves at a good pace and at the very end, all is revealed.

What I Did Not Like

The plot is dark and some may not be comfortable reading the book.
